Why I Chose a Career in Electrophysiology?

Cardiac electrophysiology is the study of the heart’s electrical pathways and electrical activity, says the top electrophysiologist in India. The test used to determine the irregularities in this electrical system is referred to as electrophysiology study (or EPS).

This article is an excerpt from two brief interviews (the links to which are provided later in the article) with Dr. Vanita Arora – the best electrophysiologist in Delhi and the first female electrophysiologist in India. She is currently a Senior Consultant Cardiac Electrophysiologist & Interventional Cardiologist at one of India’s most renowned hospitals – Apollo Hospital, Delhi.

1. What inspired you to pick electrophysiology as your specialty?

The field of electrophysiology, for the most part, has been a man’s world. But that’s not the only reason I chose a career in electrophysiology. My decision was driven by my love for mathematics and my passion for permanently curing patients with arrhythmia problems. It wasn’t an easy decision to make. But I had a good mentor by my side.

2. Who, according to you, should take cardiac electrophysiology as their area of study?

If you are someone who is greatly passionate about providing accurate diagnosis to patients, discussing EPS and likes taking challenges in general, then you should pursue electrophysiology. You have to have both a deep interest and understanding of cardiac electrophysiology.

3. What excites you most about cardiac electrophysiology?

In my opinion, cardiac electrophysiology is the best branch of cardiology. I wanted to do something new, challenging, and different to make an impact in this largely patriarchal field. What excites me the most about it is that it keeps me on my toes. If you feel the same level of deep excitement about cardiac electrophysiology, you are the right person for it.
