Sudden Cardiac Arrest Treatment

Sudden Cardiac Arrests
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and Sudden Cardiac Death (SDA) refer to the sudden cessation of cardiac activity with hemodynamic collapse.

If an intervention (eg: defibrillation) restores circulation, the event is referred to as SCA. If uncorrected, an SCA event leads to death and is then referred to as SCD.

Epidemiology of SCD
  • Accounts for 10-15% of natural deaths and 60% deaths from cardiac causes
  • Bimodal age distribution with peaks between birth and 6 months of age & after 65 years of age

  • May be the first presentation of cardiovascular disease in 25% of patients
  • General patterns of heightened risk during the morning hours, on Mondays and during the winter months have been described
  • SCA is not random event. Most victims do have heart disease or other heath problems, often without being aware of it.
  • As many as 75% of people who die of SCA show signs of a previous heart attack. 80% percent have signs of coronary artery disease.
  • Approximately 92% of those who experience SCA do not survive.
  • SCA kills more than 1,000 people a day, or one person every second.
